Queer Beograd (Serbia and Montenegro)
Queer Beograd comprises a group of activists who decided to stand against the violence. Queer Beograd is working to create events on an ongoing basis, events that foster the development of a radical queer politics and culture in Belgrade. While there are a number of NGO organizations working at the lobbying and research level, there is an absence of work that actively pushes the boundaries of social and cultural space available to queer people in the Serbian society. This is where we situate our action. As a collective, we deal with wider social issues than merely the freedom of sexual diversity because we believe all systems of oppression are interconnected. As such, we seek to build links with other groups and networks working in the area of social justice and to expand the capacity of such a network to include analysis and action concerning queer issues, as part of the fight for positive change in a patriarchal and nationalistic culture. Queer Beograd goes beyond the standard LGBT NGO approach by taking direct action to advance our own position. This includes organizing events and creating networks and political strategies that are accessible to ordinary people as an empowering experience. Because of all this, we make it our mission to create free and open spaces where members of marginalized groups can speak about their identities, share experiences and ideas, empower themselves through creativity and culture, and jointly organize actions for the promotion of human rights. We believe it is vital to provide the space where marginalized groups can meet and unite in their struggle against oppression. In this context to be queer means to refuse social rules and constantly question norms of the patriarchal tradition. To create space beyond the rigid boxes of LGBT or straight sexuality, allowing each other the “privilege” of self-definition. To present a radical politics that sees the interconnectedness of all forms of oppression. QueerBeograd is a group of eight people who decided to stand against the violence and politics of war, clericalism, nationalism, militarism and machismo that has been mainstream politics in Serbia during last 15 years. QueerBeograd fights ignorance toward problems of LGBT population and all the others who are “Different”. queerbeograd.org Zorica Zoe Gudoviæ, born in Belgrade on the 18th February, 1977.
